Gutter vac

How we clear your gutters

We use a gutter vac. It sucks out whatever has built up along the run: moss washed off the roof, feathers, bird droppings and the dark sludge that settles in the bottom.

Once the run is clear, rain can flow along it to the downpipe again. The first slider below shows one run before and after.

Worth knowing

Why blocked gutters matter

A gutter is there to catch the rain coming off your roof and carry it to the downpipe. Once it fills up, the water has nowhere to go. It tips over the front edge and runs down the brickwork instead.

Over time that leaves dark stains down the wall, keeps the bricks wet and can lead to damp patches inside, often near the top of an upstairs wall. Blocked gutters and downpipes are a recognised cause of penetrating damp.

Wet moss and silt are heavy, too. A full gutter can start to sag or pull away from its brackets. Clearing it takes that weight off and lets the rain run away as it should.

When to book

Signs your gutters need clearing

  • Rain spilling over the edge. Water pours over the front of the gutter in heavy rain instead of running to the downpipe.
  • Plants along the roofline. Grass, weeds or tufts of moss growing out of the gutter.
  • Dark stripes on the wall. Stains running down the brickwork below the gutter.
  • Damp indoors. Damp patches near the top of an upstairs wall.
  • A gutter that dips. A run that sags, drips at the joints or is pulling off its brackets.
  • A mossy roof above. Moss on the tiles keeps washing down and refilling the gutter.

Fascias and soffits

The fascia is the board along the edge of the roof that your gutter is fixed to. The soffit is the panel tucked underneath, between the fascia and the wall. On many homes, both are white uPVC.

Dirty rainwater dripping over the gutter leaves dark stripes down them, and shaded sides pick up a green film of algae. It's often what makes a house look tired from the street.

Fascias and soffits mean working at height, so we work along the boards from ladders or a mobile scaffold tower. Both are our own and included in the price, so there's nothing for you to hire or arrange.

Fascia and soffit cleaning is £100.

Questions

Gutter and fascia questions

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Welwyn?

£60 for a 2 bedroom house, £80 for a 3 bed and £100 for a 4 bed. Fascia and soffit cleaning is £100. For a bungalow or a bigger house, call or WhatsApp 07429 744826 for a price.

How often should gutters be cleared?

At least once a year, and twice if you have trees nearby or moss on the roof. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings advises clearing gutters every autumn, and says it's a good idea to do it again in spring.

Why are my fascias going green or getting black streaks?

Green is usually algae, which grows fastest where the boards stay damp and shaded, such as north-facing walls or under trees. Black streaks build up from dirty rainwater running over the gutter edge. Keeping the gutters clear helps stop overflow marks coming back as quickly.

Will old fascias look new again?

The dark drip marks and green film come off, as the photos on this page show. Very old uPVC that has yellowed or faded may not come back fully, because that's a change in the plastic itself rather than dirt.
